Blackjack is a popular card game, played in both casinos and on-line, that pits players against a dealer in order to achieve the highest score without going over 21. Both on-line blackjack and casino blackjack have the same rules. In casino blackjack and blackjack online, players are dealt two cards, with cards dealt left to right. All players have both cards dealt face up, except for the dealer. The dealer only has the top card visible, with the other card hidden.
A blackjack results if one of the players receives a face card and an ace. If one of the players has a blackjack, they earn one and a half times the amount of the original bet, provided the dealer does not also have blackjack. If the dealer has a blackjack, all other players lose.
In playing blackjack, there are several strategies that can be employed in order to achieve success:
Hit
If the cards add up to a value below 21, you may ask the dealer for a hit in order to receive another card. Once a player says “hit me”, the dealer will deal another card. If the added card value results in a score over 21, then the player has lost. If the card values are still below 21, the player can choose to receive another card or choose to stand. The dealer is required to not hit if their score is 17 and are required to hit if their score is 16 or below.
Stand
If a player wishes to stand, it means that they will not receive any further cards and that the other players at the table will be able to undergo the same process of hitting or standing.
Bust
Once a player has received cards that exceed the total of 21, the player’s hand is a bust. This means that the player has lost any bets they have made during the round. If the dealer busts, any player at the table that has not gone over the score of 21 wins.
Double Down
If a player believes that the strength of their hand and the weakness of the dealer’s hand gives them a better chance at victory, the player can request a double down, which means that, in exchange for doubling their bet, they will only receive one additional card. If a player chooses to double down, they cannot request another card afterwards.
Split
In the event a player has two identical cards, the player can elect to split the cards, meaning that they will be playing and placing bets on two separate hands rather than just one. All other blackjack rules and strategies apply to both hands.
Surrender
Normally only allowed in the game Spanish 21, a surrender of a hand results in the player giving up their cards and receiving back half of their bet.
Insurance
When the dealer’s top card after the deal is an ace, the dealer will give players the option to purchase insurance, which is equal to the total or half the amount that has already been bet. This gives the player the chance not to lose their bet in the event that the dealer already has a blackjack. The player loses their insurance if the dealer does not have blackjack, but still has the opportunity to play out the hand as normal. Purchasing insurance is only advisable if the player already has a decent hand; if they have a hand that is only 16 or lower, the player would likely have lost in any case and the insurance purchase would have been a waste.
